In the decision of the National Plate, New Zealand had two representatives in Seatown and Oratrix, but, though they ran well, they were both defeated by the New South Wales gelding Valparaiso. The following are the details of the event: NATIONAL PLATE Of £600; weight-for-age; 11 miles VALPARAISO (W. T. Brunton), b g, 6yrs, by Valais—Lady San, 9.1, J. Munro 1 SEATOWN (N.Z.), 6yrs, 9.1, T. Green 2 ORATRIX (X.Z.), 6yrs, 8.13, W. Hill 3 Valparaiso won by a length and aquarter from Seatown, who beat Oratrix by a short head for second place. Time, Last year Valparaiso ran Limerick to a neck in the last King’s Cup at Randwick. The King’s Cup is to be run on Saturday next, and the weights to be carried by the placed horses in the above race are as follow: —-Seatown, 8.9; Oratrix. 8.8; and Valparaiso, B.G. It will be seen that Valparaiso is now asked to meet Seatown on 31b. better terms and Oratrix on 41b. better terms. The distance is about a mile and a-half, two furlongs more than last Saturday’s contest. Valparaiso won nicely judging from the reports, and seems certain to start favourite next Saturday. Seatown will need to improve to beat him, but Oratrix must be given a royal chance, for she is susceptible to further improvement, and in addition the extra distance will be something in her favour.—“Early Bird.”
