They | are interested in the possibilities of j purchasing, within New Zealand, much j more material for the manufacture i of the many makes of cars produced ! by this company at Petone. Welling- | ton. j The idea is to make the motor manufacturing an integral part of the business life of the community and of value to the country as a whole. In future, therefore, each car constructed in New Zealand by the company will have as much New Zealand material incorporated as it is possible. This, to an extent, has been done in the past, b,ut in future it will be car ried out to a much greater degree. . Certain material, especially metal. > have to be imported, but many lines, ■ such as the upholstery, could be made locally. What that will mean to New ; Zealand on an annual output of be | tween six and seven thousand cars may be partially gauged from the | following figures relating to the necesi sary materials:—Upholstery, 33,000 yds: carpets, s,oooyds; top material. > 13,000yds; botton batt, 2S,0001b; New Zealand timber, 150,000 super feet; glass, 120,000 feet.
