DUCHESS BREAKS RECORD
INDIA AND BACK IN LESS THAN EIGHT DAYS
ARRIVAL AT CROYDON (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 9.30 a.m. LONDON, Friday. The Duchess of Bedford and Captain C. D. Barnard arrived at Croydon at 5.27 p.m., completing a record flight to India and back. The Duchess left Lympne, Kent at dawn last Friday. She arrived at Karachi, India, on Monday. She has thus created a record for a return flight to India, and also for the return flight. • A Press Association message from Wellington says short-wave radio enthusiasts there had very good reception from the Chelmsford Station this morning when a programme was relayed from the 2LO studio, in London. Squadron-Leader Kingsford Smith, and Flight-Lieutenant Ulm, both of whom spoke, were present. Kingsford Smith was heard perfectly and not a word was missed. He was non-com-mital regarding the further flights of the Southern Cross, which he said, was being reconditioned in Amsterdam and put into thoroughly good order. He was having four new English machines built, for the projected passenger services in Australia, and he hoped to be back at the beginning of November to show them “how to operate an efficient mail service.” Among the surprises of the evening at the studio was the arrival of Capt. C. D. Barnard, who had just returned with the Duchess of Bedford from their record-breaking flight to India and back in a few more hours than seven days.
