"FIREBUG” AGAIN?
COTTAGE BURNS AFTER LOUD EXPLOSION
CHRISTCHURCH OUTBREAK Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Today. Following a loud explosion at 9.15 last evening an unoccupied cottage in Estuary Road, Redcliffs, burst into flames. The building was a furnace before the neighbours could do anything. The noise of the explosion was heard over a wide area. The nature of the outbreak points to incendiarism. About 5 o’clock neighbours were awakened by an explosion of cartridges in the hardware department. They went out to find the whole building ablaze. Many residents soon gathered near the building, but the fire had got a good hold. By knocking down part of the wall in an oil and iron shed, a store at the back and some shops were saved. The building destroyed was a large one built of wood, with an iron roof. BIG STORE BURNED FARMERS’ CO-OP BRANCH Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Today. The New Zealand Farmers’ Co-op-erative stores at Oxford were destroyed by fire early this morning. Incendiarism is suspected. Stock in the store was worth £7,000.
FIRE IN NEW PLYMOUTH
SIGNS OF INCENDIARISM KEROSENE-SOAKED SACKING (From Our Own Correspondent) NEW PLYMOUTH, Today. Kerosene-saturated sacking was discovered at the point where a fire had broken out in an alley-way off Currie Street on Thursday night. The fire did little damage, the brigade extinguishing it with water and chemicals before it had time to get a hold. The sacking was found among a heap of rubbish in a small lean-to, where the fire had apparently begun. The wooden wall on one side of the alley was protected to some extent by a five-foot concrete barrier; but, even so, a small hole was burned in the boards before the flames were extinguished.
No one was seen in the vicinity of the outbreak before the fire was discovered.
