SHIP’S DECK BLOWN UP
VIOLENT EXPLOSION ON OIL VESSEL TWO OF CREW INJURED MELBOURNE, Friday. There was a violent explosion today on the Swedish motor-ship Falsterbo at Williamstown. The vessel had on board 25.000 cases of kerosene and lubricating oil. A portion of the decking and of the engineer’s cabin was blown 200 ft into the air. A fire followed, and the flames enveloped the bridge. The crew worked feverishly with chemical extinguishers, and assisted by fire brigades succeeded in subduing the fire before it got too firm a hold. Two members of the crew were injured. The origin of the explosion is not known. «The Falsterbo is a vessel of 4,085 tons, built at Gothenburg in 1925, and owned by S. G. Janson, Gothenburg. She left Port Arthur, Texas, on June 20, for discharge at Tasmania.. Melbourne, Geelong, Adelaide and Fremantle.
