SUNSETS AND BABIES
QUIET CORNER
(Written for THE SUN by llie Rev. Charles Chandler, Assistant City Missioner.) 'JO broach the subject of accident insurance just as a fellow is stepping aboard his airplane shows a lack of the sense of the fitness of things. neither would anybody but a fool try to canvass the sale of a new motor-car to a man who is slowly emerging from beneath the wreckage of one. It’s all a matter of waiting one’s chance. To talk to a ’’punter** about the evils of horse-racing just after he has collected a substantial dividend from the totalisator is almost useless. The opportune moment to approach that subject is when that same person is walking home after an unsuccessful meeting. Success, whether as a burglar or a policeman, a salesman or a parson, is largely wrapped up in this guest for the opportune moment. It teas after Jesus had given the rich young ruler some credit for having kept the commandments from his youth up, that He said. “Yet one thing thou lackest—go sell all that thou hast. .. .” Not until His disciples had experienced some fear as the result of a storm did Jesus speak to them of courage. It was after her accusers had vanished that the companssionate Master said to that foolish woman: “Neither do I condemn thee, go and sin no more." He did not make a "show” of her. With a photographer it is just a matter of “turn your face a little this way . . . remove your spectacles . . . now try to smile . . . ah! that's it . . . click . . . thank you very much . . . call for the proofs on Wednesday." He clicks at the opportune moment. He who would see a sunset or a baby at their best must wait for that moment when the sun has kissed the purple hills, or a smile has wreathed two dimpled cheeks. NEXT WEEK: SAY SOMETHING!
