Ganger Killed by Sudden Explosion
AGONISING JOURNEY TRAGEDY AT WAIKAREMOANA (From Our Own Correspondent) NAPIER, Today. A premature explosion of a dynamite charge inflicted such terrible injuries on a head ganger working on road construction near Waikarejroana yesterday morning that he died several hours later in the Wairos Hospital. George White, a widower aged 40, was In charge of a gang engaged in blasting a rock face. He had put in position the first of a series of four charges and was fixing the second when it. exploded. He was Bung 30ft away and down a 20ft bank. One of his arms was almost torn off. one eye was blown out, the other badly Injured, and several ribs were broken.
In spite of his injuries he was still Conscious when his mates reached him. He was given all possible attention and then carried on a rough stretcher to the lakeside. There he was put In a launch which took him ten miles across the water to Lake House. He was then transferred to a Public Works Department’s ambulance and driven 39 miles to the JVairoa Hospital.
The agonising journey of nearly 50 tniles, lasting over seven hours, how•ver, had been too much for his Itrength. and be died at 4.45 p.m., Ihortly after admission.
