NEW MEMBERS WELCOMED AT MONTHLY MEETING ELECTION OF OFFICERS The monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of the Y.W.C.A. was held cn Friday morning. Mrs. G. H. Wilson presided over a well-attended meeting. Mrs. Wilson led the devotional period, which was followed by a discussion on women police. It was unanimously agreed that the Y.W.C.A. heartily support the present agitation for the appointment of women police in New Zealand. The protective nature of this work was considered highly desirable, and it was urged that legislation be drawn up, making it possible for women police to function where needed most.
After morning tea, two new members of the board were welcomed, Mrs. Todd Smith and Mrs. O’Halloran. A fine expression of appreciation of Mrs. T. Clark’s services was recorded.
The election of the officers of the board resulted as follows:—Vice-pre-sidents, Mesdames G. I-I. Wilson, J. C. Dickinson, J. W. Wiseman, Chas. Smith and A. D. Campbell; treasurer, Mrs. M. Rudd; recording secretary, Miss F. Goodfellow; two newly-elected members of executive, Mrs. F. G. Whitley and Miss Dempsey. The following appointments as chairwomen to committees were made:—Cafeteria, Mrs. F. G. Whitley; house, Mrs. 11. B. Webster; hostel, Mrs. J. C. Dickinson; world fellowship, Mrs. Todcl Smith; business girls’ club, Miss F. Fleming; immigration, Mrs. D. G. Cole; holiday house, Airs. G. 11. Wilson; club activities, Aliss D. Dempsey; executive and finance, Airs. J. A. Bradstreet. Aliss Bentham, associate general secretary, in her report lor the month, stated that the recent membership contest between the senior and gins’ department, resulted in an increase of 215 members. The senior girls won the contest and were presented with a beautiful cushion by Mrs. Len Clark. The girls’ department was the recipient, of a picture presented by Airs. T. Clark. The annual meeting had passed off successfully, also a mother and daughter banquet. The senior clubs were undertaking good programmes of handicrafts or courses in psychology and civics. Plans for the Y.W.C.A. Convention were discussed, and registrations are coming in. Airs. J. C. Dickinson and Aliss D. Dempsey were appointed members of the National Board. A report of the business of the National Council of Women was given by the delegates, and the question of the ease of young Maori girls finding difficulty in securing board and amusement was discussed. Aliss Begg spoke of the splendid work done by the Methodist sister, Aliss Ivy Jones, in providing club life and the securing cf employment for Maori girls. The Y.W.C.A. was prepared to accommodate Ataori girls, and did so whenever requested. Aliss Bcgg was appointed as delegate to the conference on religious educa- ! tion, to be held in Christchurch at the j beginning of September.
