A POSTER’S “DAMN”

SWEARING FOR FIVE WEEKS A cinema owner, Peter Pickard, was charged at Govan Police Court, Glasgow, with having caused annoyance by the exhibition of a poster advertising his cinema, the White Elephant. The poster, which was worded, “The White Elephant is not so damn far away,” was displayed on a wall adjoining a rival picture house. A witness said that it was a disgrace that a citizen of Glasgow should be allowed to exhibit such a poster. It was simply “a swear." and it had been there “swearing at the corner” for five weeks. Pickard was fined £l, the maximum penalty.
