IN NEW ROLE

Sir John Martin Harvey, Actor, as Thief-Hunter DAUGHTER LOCKED IN ROOM

URGLARS .who broke into the house of Sir John Martin Harvey, actor, Parkholme, East Sheen, London, locked Miss Muriel Martin, his

daughter, also a stage favourite, in her bedroom. They took a large silver salver belonging to Sir John and a quantity of his daughter’s jewellery. Not a single clue was left by the thieves. Someone in Room “About four o'clock in the morning,” said Sir John, “my daughter Muriel, who sleeps bn the first floor, heard someone iu her room. “She cried out, ‘Who’s there,’ and the man or men promptly ran out and turned the key in the door, locking her in. “I was sleeping in the next room but one, and my daughter cried out, ‘There’s been a man here. He’s just gone, and he’s locked me in my room.’ “I jumped out of bed and found my daughter’s room locked on the outside. I made a search of other rooms and found the intruders had been in several of them.

My daughter’s personal jewellery

had been taken from my wife’s study. It Included bracelets, rings, brooches, and other articles. “They also took, and this is my most serious loss, a large silver salver given me by my company in 1914, and autographed by them. “It was about the only bit of silver in the house. “I hope they will be gentlemen enough to send it back,” Sir John said, “because I attach great sentimental value to it. “My daughter thought she heard a car drive away immediately after raising the alarm, but the police in the district have no trace of one being about at that time.”
