Gold in Barrels! A £20,000 Hoard

IDDEN among the property of the late Madame Humbert, of La Retraite, St. Ouens, Jersey, who died about three months ago, aged 92, has been

discovered money to the total value of £20,000, a great proportion of which is in gold. Carts called at La Retraite and the money was taken away in barrels. Madame Humbert was known to have a large income. During the last years of her life, she refused to make use of a bank. It was at the sale of Madame Humbert's furniture that long-missing letters written by King Charles 11. to Sir George Carteret, at that time Lieuten-ant-Governor of Jersey, and to the bailiffs and curates of the island, were discovered in a secret drawer.
