ROXY
“THE DONOVAN AFFAIR” Not in years has there been a more notable combination of talent than in the screen adaptation of Owen Davis’s famous stage mystery, “The Donovan Affair,” a Columbia all talking production, which commences its Auckland season at the Roxy Theatre this evening. Jack Holt, Dorothy Revier and William Collier, junr., are featured in the leading roles. Frank R. Capra directed this thrilling mystery drama with the cast that is like a “Who’s Who” in Hollywood. John Roche, recently seen in “Diamond Handcuffs,” plays the part of Jack Donovan about whom the mys-
tery centres. Fred Kelfeey, seen in “The Gorilla” as one of the two “boob” detectives, is Carney, the sleuth who hinders rather than helps in the investigation. Hank Mann, hero of a hundred comedies, will be seen as Dr. Lindsey, a semi-humor-ous character. Agnes Ayres, former Paramount star and noted
for her many portrayals, will be seen as Lydia Rankin, the beautiful second wife of Peter Rankin at whose home the mystery takes place. Wheeler Oakman plays the ill-fated Porter who is mysteriously slain during the action of the picture. Virginia Brpwn Faire, who has been seen in numberless important productions, appears as Mary Mills, the maid who is involved in the plot. . This evening’s programme will also include a number of all-talkie supports, making in all a most interesting entertainment. First of all, there will be a musical show entitled 4 The Snappv Coeds,” starring Nan Blackstone. " Then, by special arrangement and exclusive to the Roxy, there will be presented, with full sound accompaniment, views of the running of the latest English Derby. Finally there will be a Pa the sound news, and audio review, and “Screen Snapshots, in which the voices of famous stars are heard.
