DOMINION HOPES
EXERCISED AT RANDWICK FILLIES AND SPRING CLASSICS Limerick at exercise at Randw.ick the day after he arrived revealed no evil effects of his mishap on the wharf the previous day. Trainers always look for serious effects some 24 hours after a bad wrench, but Limerick's free action left no doubt as to his immunity. He has developed into a massive horse since his last visit. He was very fresh on the track, a.nd, after easy exercise, commenced to rear. So McCarten slipped to the ground, and took a firm hold of the bridle to prevent playful pranks that might aggravate any possible weaknes from the previous day’s slip on the wharf. Another notable New Zealander on the track was Nedda, comments a Sydney writer. She has not grown much since she won last autumn’s Sires’ Produce Stakes at Flemington, and gained places in the Sires’ Produce and Champagne at Randwick. Her trainer, Jack Fielder, says she is stronger and better developed than when she was last here. Against the Fillies But whether Nedda will develop into a Derby possibility remains to be seen. Fillies rarely do well for the spring classics. The other New Zealand filly already here, Gay Ballerina, is not of that powerful build that suggests Derby possibilities, either. In fact, she is smaller than Nedda. She proved smart among two-year-old fields in New Zealand, and while she may prove herself in sprint events prior to the big spring carnival, the winning of classics might be a totally different matter.
Another New Zealander, who pleased the onlookers with his appearance on renewing acquaintance with Randwick tracks was Paquito. Winner of a High-weight division, seven furlongs, and the Tocal Handicap, 14 miles, he impressed racegoers with his form last autumn. Sine© then he has developed in the right way, and bigger things may be possible in the coming spring.
