£2.292 for Earthquake Relief The “Ashburton Guardian" Earthquake Relief Fund has been closed clown and the total amount collected. £1,661, has been remitted to Wellington. This sum, together with various smaller funds subscribed in the district, brings the total contributions from Ashburton County up to more than £2,292. —P.A. * * * Train Stops ir» Tunnel A mechanical defect in an electrielocomotive which drew the early goods trains from Christchurch to Lyttelton this morning, caused a hold-up at an awkward moment. The train stopped in the middle of the tunnel, and not till two steam locomotives arrived from Lyttelton and towed the train through was the trouble overcome.—P.A. Byrd Hears Maoris A message has been received by the chief telegraph eugineer from Little America by the Eleanor Bolling, addressed to Station 2YA and advising that the broadcast of the Maori programme was heard perfectly and returning sincere appreciation and thanks.
When they return, says Commander R. E. Byrd, they may get a chance of thanking some of the performers in person.
