SWAM TO FREEDOM

ESCAPEES FROM ITALIAN “DEVIL’S ISLAND” WHILE GUARDS MADE MERRY (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 11.56 a.m. PARIS, Thursday. Details of the escape from imprisonment on arid Lipari Island of the three anti-Fascists, Professor Roselli, Emilio Lussu and Francesco Nitti, show that their getaway was due to their splendid swimming powers. They contrived to reach the beach at night-time, while most of the guards were drinking in the cafes. Fully clothed, they swam to the mainland, though searchlights were playing ori sea and shore. This is the first escape from Italy’s "Devil’s Island” that has been recorded. There are 400 guards on the island for 500 prisoners. A previous message said Nitti is a nephew of a former Prime Minister of Italy, who is now in exile in Paris. All three escapees were heroes in the war, but they opposed the Fascists. They had been guarded on tbe island with the utmost care. At night sentries were on duty and motor-boats were on patrol. Yet they managed to escape. The newspapers in Italy were not allowed to publish the fact, but it became generally known in Rome and created a sensation.
