LICENSED BOOKMAKERS
MAORI MEMBER SEEKS RETURN (THE SUK'S Parliamentary Reporter) PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Tours. Licences for bookmakers are desired by Mr. T. Makitanara (Southern Maori) according to amendments he has submitted to the Gaming Amendment Bill of Sir George; Hunter (Waipawa). When the Gaming Amendment Bill comes up for second reading, Mr. Makitanara has given notice to move, in committee, to add the following clauses. (a) Every racing club which is authorised to use a totalisator shall, from time to time, on the application of any person who is, in the opinion of the committee or other managing body of such a club, a fit and proper person to be so licensed grant a licence to such person to enter on any racecourse, used or occupied by such club, and there to carry on business as a . bookmaker. (b) Every such licence is to he for such period as the club thinks fit, and the club may charge for such licence any fee not exceeding £2O for every day of the currency of such licence. Mr. Makitanara desires the repeal of the section of the act making it an offence to bet with bookmakers. Sir George Hunter’s Bill aims at securing the telegraphing of bets to the secretary of a racing club, and to permit the publication of dividends.
