A REAL CHAMPION
VyTLL IE SMITH, the crack English billiards ■ player, who won and lost a match against Walter Lindrum, is an unusual sort of champion. Most professional holders of a title guard it jealously, usually stalling off dangerous challenges as long as possible, since the glamour attaching is good for the bank account. After Smith scored his first win in 1919-20 from Faulkiner, he let the title slide for a couple of seasons, and then came out to down Tom Newman in 1923. That was his last appearance in a championship match, though there is little doubt that the Yorkshire lino-type-operator is easily the best pla3*er in English billiards today.
