Auckland v. Thames
OLD OPPONENTS MEET AGAIN Keen Game Expected EVEX with a representative team playing at Carterton for the Ranfurly Shield, Auckland will field a good side at Eden Park tomorrow in the match with Thames. With improved weather experienced during the week the ground should be in better condition and a good game should result. Although the Auckland B team was beaten by Thames Valley last week, tomorrow the team is expected to make a much better showing. The visiting side will be led by A. Lomas, ex-New Zealand and Auckland representative, and judging by its personnel will be strong forward. Thames and Auckland are old opponents and in this fixture a keen game generally results. JUNIOR NOTES PARS ABOUT THE PLAYERS Interest in the junior competition has now reached an exceptionally keen stage, owing to the narrow margin of points separating the section leaders, there being fully six teams now in the running for the premiership. Ponies have a double “leg-in,” the teams being among the leaders in both sections. In the A class Eden and Grafton are also knocking hard, while in B section, Alarist, Grammar, Old Boys and Technical Old Boys are pretty well on terms. " The closeness of the competitions was reflected in the scoring when the leading teams met on Saturday. The rivals in B section, Ponsonby and Alarist, fought out an exceptionally hard match to a draw —three points all, comprising a penalty goal to a try, at the Domain. The Tykes’ forwards, a solid packing fast following lot, predominated in the tight and loose, but Ponies back combination overshadowed the opposition rearguard. Rudling, Ponies’ first-five-eighth, a clever connecting link, was invaluable in attacking movements. He consistently fed the ball out to the wing-threequarter, Carter, who displayed plenty of dash in his running. Goodacre, at fullback, gave a very sound exposition. Prominent among the Ponies’ forwards were Hardy and Malcolm, the latter showing splendid form as rover. The Tykes’ pack put up a vigorous fight, McVeagh and Hurst, who has returned to the game after some time, showing to advantage in the tight and loose. Alueller, at five-eighth, was the bright spot of the Alarist rearguard. Loom, fullback, is one of the most promising players in the grade in this position. * * * A hard forward battle was witnessed in the Grammar Old Boys’-Pub-lic Works’ match, in which victory went to the former by 5 points to 3. The Government team is unusually heavy particularly in the forwards, and with coaching and training could be developed into a combination that would be one of the hardest fifteens in the competition. The team has already improved markedly this season. * * * Another keen struggle was witnessed in the A section battle between Eden and Grafton, two of the leading teams on the ladder. The Eden team managed to win by 8 points to 6. The fielding and handling of both teams was exceptionally good under the greasy ground conditions, and considering the fact that play was opened up at every available opportunity. J. lnglis, the
Eden half, was an excellent pivot, setting his backs in motion smartly on either side of the scrum, and he was well assisted by Cowan on attack. The pair formed a good inside defence. Of the forwards, Hume, Dick Howard and McGregor were most outstanding. Grafton forwards, though a much lighter combination all round, predominated throughout the second spell, but overanxiousness spoilt their chances of scoring. Glenn was easily the most consistent of the pack. In the rearguard, FinneH, centre, and Hall, wingthreequarter, and Scott, fullback, gave a sound exhibition. The third grade match between Marist and Hamilton on Saturday was much appreciated by the lads, and it provided a willing contest, which resulted in a draw —six points all. Interest will be centred tomorrow in the clash between an Auckland third grade representative team, and a Thames junior rep. fifteen, which will be staged at Eden Park as a curtainraiser to the Auckland B-Tliames representative fixture.
