AMBULANCE DAY
ST. JOHN HELPERS WIN RESPONSE SERVICE TO COMMUNITY The Cross of St. John had its representatives stationed everywhere in the city today. Collection boxes clinked to tell the story of the annual appeal for funds by the St. John Ambulance Brigade. tPHIS year the brigade Is wanting 1,600 to cover expenses during its valuable services to the community for another year. Aucklanders, recognising the meaning of stall placards saying that ambulance officers conveyed 1,279 patients in the past year, that 10,084 persons on the waterfront received attention, and describing the immense work of the brigade's nursing division, have yielded to the need for contribution. Uniformed nurses, crowds of women helpers, young women quietly determined to waylay city workers —they are making the appeal for the brigade a success. The response, in spite of the nearness to the collections for earthquake sufferers, was excellent this morning. This afternoon busier streets had their activity reflected in the collection boxes. Auckland does not forget the work on the community’s behalf of the brigade’s staff.
