PRIMAGE DUTY CONDEMNED
COMMERCE CHAMBER’S PROTEST
In response to a request by the executive cf the Associated Chambers of Commerce for an expression of opinion on the taxation proposals of the Minister of Finance, the committee of the Onehunga-Manukau Chamber of Commerce, which met last evening, decided to reply that in its opinion a protest should be entered against the imposition of additional primage duty. It was held that in the interests of the trade of the Empire an increase in the duty on foreign goods would meet with general approval, and that if this proposal was deemed impracticable it would be preferable to increase the tax on luxuries rather than on the necessaries of life.
