FIRES AT RAETIHI
HOUSE AND TIMBER-MILL (From Our Own Correspondent) The flames were bursting through the roof of the six-roomed house occupied by Mr. Lister and family, at the’ corner of Grey and Ward Streets, Raetihi, on Saturday night, when the alarm was given to the fire brigade. Mr. Lister was at home with one of his children and was awakened by a strange noise. Upon investigating he was met by a cloud of smoke and saw flames in the ceiling. lie rushed back to the bedroom and seized the child and jumped out of the window and gave the alarm A good supply of water was available, and the outbreak was soon extinguished by the fire brigade. Two rooms were gutted and the remainder of the house was damaged by water and smoke. The house was the property of Mr. A. Hebbend, of New Plymouth. There was an insurance of about £l5O on the furniture, which included a piano. On Tuesday afternon, when the men were absent for a few minutes, the ptaning-shed at Plunkett's mill at Patihi was destroyed by fire, and the machinery badly damaged.
