WATER OFFER REJECTED

MT. ROSKILL TO APPROACH CITY “NIGGER IN THE WOODPILE” Th• Mount Roskill Road Board, at its mooting last evening, rejected the offer of the One Tree Hill Road E‘oard to supply water at 10d a thousand gallons, and decided to approach the Auckland City Council for an increased supply. The One Tree Hill Board’s offer, 'which was deferred for consideration from the Roskill Board’s last meeting:, was made on the following terms: -—Any quantity up to 70,000 gallons a day, for a period of five years from April 1 to October 31 in each year During the remaining five months the quantity supplied would vary according to the quantity available. The necessary meters and fittings, estimated to cost £IBO, to be paid by the Mount .Roskill Board. Mr. R. Sanft moved, and Mr. S. I. Goodall seconded, that the offer be accepted, holding that, if necessary, adequate supplies during the summer months could still be obtained from the city. Mr. G. EL Tansley moved an amendment rejecting the offer, and upon the chairman ruling it out of order. Mr. Tansley replied:—“l am sorry that you see fit to muzzle members of the board. You have no right to stop The amendment because it does not fit in with your own views. I am merely expressing my honest conviction.*' He contended that the offer was absolutely useless, because it did not guarantee an adequate supply for more than seven months in the year. Mr. J. Donald declined taking the risk of running short of water in the dry season. Mr. Goodafl held that in dry seapons the Auckland and Mount Eden (supplies would still be available. Mr. Tansley: You have to spend r -CIBO, and perhaps more to make a problematical saying of £262. The chairman, Mr. E. F. Jones, pointed out that the engineer had recommended additional sources of supply. and the board would be doing the t ight thing by closing with the One Tree Hill Board’s offer. Mr. Goodall: Put the motion, Mr. f'hairman. The members have apparently decided how they will vote. There is evidently a nigger in the woodpile. The motion was lost by five votes to four, the noea being Messrs. Tansley. Simson, Pearce. Scarborough, and Donald. Mr. Tansley then proposed a resolution that a deputation consisting of Messrs. Goodall, Donald, and himself be appointed to wait upon the waterworks committee of the Auckland City Council, urging the laying of an eightinch main, which he contended would give sufficient quantity, with the necessary pressure for fire-fighting, for the requirements of the whole district, and Incidentally do away with ♦he “eighteen penny” water from Mount Eden. This was carried.
