WATER BOARD BILL
SUPPORT FROM MOUNT ROSKILL SCHEME OUTLINED The Mount Roskill Road Board at its meeting last evening decided to request Messrs. W. J. Jordan and C. G. Munns, M.P.’s for the district, to support the Auckland Provincial Water Board Bill when the question is put in the House. It was pointed out in a communication signed by Mr. E. H. Potter, Mayor of Mount Eden, that if the board is established it is proposed to pump water from the Waikato River to a reservoir at Bombay, whence it would gravitate to Auckland. This would require some 30 miles of water mains capable of delivering 15,000,000 gallons a day, but would not interfere with any existing scheme. The cost of the service is estimated at £700,000 and the annual charges for interest, sinking fund, pumping and other working expenses are set down at £52,000. It is calculated that 3,000,000 gallons a day at Is a thousand gallons will produce an annual revenue of £54,750 and 6,000,000 gallons a day at 7d will give £63,875 a year, thus allowing a safe margin between revenue and expenditure. The mains from Bombay would form part of a permanent pipeline in the event of the scheme being extended to Arapuni. There would be no obstacle preventing any local authority from supplementing its supply’ from the proposed scheme, and it would serve a greater area than any other scheme in the Auckland Province, besides solving the water problem for all time.
