DRAFFIN CUP FINAL

HUNTLY LEAGUERS’ OVERWHELMING WIN (From Our Own Correspondent J HUNTLY. Tuesday. The Draffin Cup competition on Saturday between Huntly and Taupiri was a rather one-sided affair, Huntly trouncing Taupiri by 29 to 2 and retaining the cup. Timms, Scott, Whorskey, Knapper and Gruby were the trygetters for Huntly, against u penalty goal by the losers. Mr. Arthur Harlock refereed. The winners threw the ball about to advantage, and forwards as well as backs participated in the movements. One particularly sparkling bit of play was when Rayner started an attack, the ball traversing from the left to the right and back again to top off o. pretty try. Taupiri was not at full strength, but put up a creditable performance nevertheless. Stephenson. Timms and Trautvettei. ! fresh from their Auckland trip, were in form and hooked the oval with monotonous regularity. That gave Knight a chance of showing his ability which he did with credit, though Smith with a winning pack was sound, but a tendency to overrun his passes marred a good display. Jones was an absentee and Knapper made an excellent substitute. Rayner was safe, while Scott and Whorskey combined well in the five-eighths I line, the former showing improvement ! in each game, irrespective of position placed in. For Taupiri, Farrell and Jac-caways ! stood out in the rearguard, and the

others were outshadowed by the winners, the half and five-eighth line seeing little of the ball. The vanguard was weak, and no wonder, for only one (Buss) was up to standard. There was no denying their gameness, however. The Morrin Cup was presented to the Hamilton Club last year by Huntly. but Ngaruawahia took it from it last Saturday by 16 to 9. Now Huntly is after its scalp and is going t.o get it back if it can. However, it will have to defend its right to hold the Draffin Cup for another year next Saturday, when Ngaruawahia will try to win it. and then will come the Morrin Cup contest. There is little between these two teams and two good League matches can be looked for to practically close, the season’s play locally, as Huntly is the crack team in the senior competition. Huntly B went down in the junior grade by 5 to 0 after a close game, but the Ngaruawahia colts beat Huntly by 29 to 2, the same tally by which Huntly seniors upended Taupiri. CUP FINAL TAKINGS (From Our Own Correspondent J TAUPIRI. Tuesday. The cup final of the Rugby League, played between Huntly and Ngaruo - wahia, and won by Huntly, attracted a large attendance of spectators. proceeds of the “gate,” together with those from a stall run by several local ladies, amounted to £3O Is 6d. The net takings of £2B 14s was equally divided between the Earthquake Relief Funds opened by the Ngaruawahia “Advocate” and the Huntly “Press.”
