MAIL BOXES RIFLED
WIDESPREAD THEFTS IN NEW PLYMOUTH THOUSANDS OF LETTERS GONE (From Our Own Correspondent) NEW PLYMOUTH, Today. Eight letter boxes were forced open and cleared of all the letters posted in them during the weekend some time on Sunday night. Post Office officials estimate that between three and four thousand letters were taken. The robberies were carried out at widely-scattered points in the town, though almost all the boxes are in well-populated districts. Their positions are as follow:—Corner of Carrington and Brooklands Roads, corner of Tukapo Street and Omata Road, corner of Tukapo and David Streets, top High School Hill, foot of High School Hill, corner of Devon and Saekville Streets, corner of Record and Barriball Streets, and one beyond Waiwakaiho Bridge. The thefts were discovered by an official when clearing the boxes early on Monday morning. Nothing had been put into the boxes since the roliberies and as no one had reported anything wrong it is plain that the thieves must have worked late on Sunday night. The boxes had last been cleared at midday on Saturday, so that the whole of the week-end,’s posting was stolen.
