STRANGE ACQUITTED
NOT GUILTY OF FRAUD CHARGE “CATHOLIC REVIEW” CASE Arthur Strange, who was at one time one of the partners in “Tabor and Company,” who set up in Auckland as publishers of the “1930 Catholic Review” some months ago, was acquitted of a charge of fraud in the Supreme Court yesterday afternoon. He had been charged with obtaining £l5O by false pretences from Arthur Frederick Rowe. TT was alleged that accused had falsely represented that the firm of Tatbor and Company had a sound, well-established publishing business in the Dilworth Building, and that among these was the “1930 Catholic Review,” allegedly published with the authority of the Roman Catholic Church, and with authority to distribute it throughout all Roman Catholic Churches in New Zealand. The defence was presented during the afternoon session. Strange went into the box and testified that in response to an advertisement he had entered into partnership with Tabor, whom he was satisfied was honest. He was engaged in canvassing for advertisements for a classified business phone directory, which, however, was stopped by the Telegraph Department declining to sanction publication. When Tabor started the “Catholic Review-,” accused notified his intention of withdrawing from the partnership. He declared that he had told Rowe in good faith that the business was a good one.
