First j to enter the throne room Avas Miss Alma Tonkin, the Friendly Societies' candidate, taking her place as Princess Alma. In a A\ r ell- arranged setting. Waratah, “Queen of Northern Wairoa," took her place. Mr. Douglas Ross, as Lord High Chancellor, made a speech, and then performed the coronation ceremony. An assurance of loyalty was given by Mr. W. Worsley, Lord High Chamberlain. Prominent participants in the carnival presented to Miss Wakelin after Miss Tonkin Avere Miss Betty Way, Miss Florence Wakelin, Miss Melba Smith and Miss Phoebe Whatford. Contributors to a \ r ocal and instrn- ' mental programme Avere:—Messrs. A. W. Christie, and R. A. Richardson, and the orchestra. The-elected candidate addressed the audience asid handed scrolls to the Chancellor and the Chamberlain. In an “honours list,” Messrs. Arthur Whatford, George Kirton, IF. H. Tonkin, Clifton Way, Denis Rush, A. J. Smith, Aubrey Hitchcock, Sidney Brown, Robert Cassidy, Claude Antonelli and Leslie • Houghton received distinctions. At the suggestion of the organiser of the carnival, Mr. A. S. Whatford, a vote of thanks Avas passed to Mrs. Harding. Ceremonial assistants were Phoebe Martin. Daphne Ebbs, Isa Start, Vera Vause, Joan Cook, Shirley Plummer, Ivy Kirton, Ruth Kirton, Norma Antonelli, June Houghton. Joan Antonelli, Zena Antonelli, Zena Hitchcock, Vera Kirton, Hazel Kirton, Nita Morris, Nancy Finlayson, Vernon Rope, Ronald Hayes, K. Watters, L. Houghton and B. Jones. A dance followed. CARD AFTERNOON FOR ONEHUNGA FREE KINDERGARTEN The' fund for the erection of a school for the Onehunga Free Kindergarten was appreciably increased yesterday, Avhen a successful tea and card afternoon was held at John Court. Ltd. The function Avas organised by the Onehunga Kindergarten Committee, comprising Mesdames T. J. G. Neill, D. Cuthbert, G. Chapman, Norman Wade. E. V. Sutherland, J. W. Macklow, J. Kirkwood and V. Kirk. Largely due to the c^- operation of the other kindergarten committees in the City, some 29 tables Avere occupied, the prize-winners being Mesdames Watson Airey, D. Thompson and G. Patterson.
