WINTER CUP

PRICKLES REGISTERS FINE TRIAL KING BALBOA UNLUCKY Prickles, who was having 1 her first race in Mr. W. J. Blake’s colours, scored a brilliant victory in the Brabazon Handicap, telegraphs The Sun's Christchurch representative. Royal Game, Overdrawn and Chick - wheat lost several lengths at the start. Subdivision was the first to become j prominent but when the field had settled down the order was Subdivision, Rascal, Sagittarius, Bonogne, Solrose and Gay Sonnet. At the halfi mile Gay Sonnet put in a swift run on the outer, and racing across the top was showing the way to Solrose, Subdivision and Prickles. Gay Sonnet was the first to turn for home, and at the false rail had as its nearest attendants Solrose. Prickles. Rascal. Solferite. Bonogne and Anolo. Prickles shot to the front inside the distance, and finishing strongly, defeated Royal Game by a length. King Balboa was a length and a-half away ! third. Then followed Rascal. Gay Sonnet, Overdrawn Anolo - and Bon- ; ogne. A Good Performance | In the early stages of the race, Prickles was running in the middle of the field, but four furlongs from i home, where Gay Sonnet was siiowj ing the way to Solrose and Subdlvij sion, she was not far away. Turning into the straight she closed rapidly on the leaders, and after passing the false ; rail she unwound a strong burst of ! which soon took her to the | front. | She was hard pushed over the last ! 100 yards, but the way she battled out the finish revealed strong determination. The Panmure mare is in the Winter Cup, with a very handy weight, and as a result of her win on Saturday, she is sure to be one of the fancied brigade for Tuesday week’s bi:r race. Royal Game covered more ground than any other runner in the race, and to run such a close second after losing nearly a dozen lengths at the start, he did exceptionally well. Turning into the straight, King Balboa appeared to meet with interfer- ; ence, but once he got clear tie finished with a very powerful run and was i gaining on the leaders at the end with every stride. His Winter Cup admirers need not be downhearted over his failure on Saturday, for the extra furlong in the big Riccarton mile will see him to much greater advantage, and with only 9.10 to carry he makes a very strong appeal. Gay Sonnet ran an excellent race, as did Rascal, this pair just being defeated in the last few strides by King Balboa for the minor placing.
