LABOUR RETAINS SEAT
COMMUNIST DEFEATED IN BY ELECTION (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) LONDON, Friday. A by-election was held today at Leeds, South-east, to fill the seat rendered vacant by the appointment of Sir Henry Slesser as a Lord Justice ot Appeal. The polling resulted as follows: J. Milner (.Labour) .. .. 11,SO 1 IV. Brain (Communist) .. 512 Mr. Brain forfeits his deposit. The result ot the polling for the Leeds South-east seat at the recent general election was:
Sir Henry Slesser (Labour) 22403 J. C. Spurr (Conservative) 7,385
