THE LAST BIG FRENCH WARSHIP TO VISIT NEW ZEALAND was the armoured cruiser Victor Hugo which with the Jules Michelet, did a world trade cruise in 1922. The Victor Hugo, with her two sets of funnels, set wide apart, is a typical pre-war French fighting ship, just as the Tourville is the embodiment of everything that is modern.
