ANSWERS TO PUZZLED GARDENERS
A.G., Herr.e Bay. —The potato sent to me has been attacked by a common ground beetle, some of which were still in the sample sent. Purif3* the ground by the application of White Island No. 1. Your scarlet runners were attacked by rust disease. Later, when they have commenced to grow again, spray with lime and sulphur. W.R.W., Ellerslie .—f would not suggest planting a wattle hedge as tbe roots will take too much out of the soil. Ordinary barberry will make a good close hedge and will keep the cows out. It is quick growing and stands severe winds.
For a front hedge, Olearia would be very effective and suit your situation well. Other effective shrubs nonflowering for the front are Retinospora Euonymous Vari., and Fan Palms. Flowering species different to those yet planted: Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Enostemon, Luculia and Polnsettia. Your climbing roses could be shifted from the fence and placed against the pergolas lining the path.
