GAOL FOR RECEIVER
WARNING FROM BENCH LEE GETS 12 MONTHS “HARD” Warning accused that if he started on a career of crime in future an indeterminate sentence was awaiting him, Mr. Justice Ostler, in the Supreme Court this morning, sentenced George Lee, 36 years of age, to one year's hard labour for receiving stolen jewellery. M R J - J. SULLIVAN, ou Lee’s behalf, said that prisoner was married and had one child. He had been out of work for some months through sheer hard luck, having broken his leg in two places. Counsel appealed to the court to impose a merciful sentence, as Lee had promised that he would go straight in future, and never again would he be involved in similar affairs. Remarking that Lee had been several times previously convicted for theft and receiving since May, 1928, his Honour said that prisoner’s conduct so far showed no signs of reformation. “In addition,” said his Honour, “you made a serious charge, amounting to criminal offences, against two police officers, which the jury disbelieved, and rightly so.” His Honour announced his intention of giving prisoner a chance by awarding 12 months’ hard labour.
