ITEMS ON ESTIMATES £5,500 FOR ROTORUA (THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter) PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Friday. Further interesting items appearing in the Estimates for this year, presented in the House of Representatives by the Minister of Finance. Sir Joseph Ward, include the following: There was an expenditure of £4,903 on the Te Kauwhata horticultural station last year. This year’s vote is £5,000. There are credits in aid amounting to £7.G10. A new grant of £9,000 has been made to assist the beekeeping industry. A guarantee of £5,800 has been voted on the export of eggs. The guarantee on tho export of pork is £25,000, last year’s vote being £20,000. HEALTH RESORTS For the Rotorua baths, wages, repairs and sundry expenses, £1,200 has been voted; for the Rotorua sanatorium, maintenance, £4,300; for the To Aroha hot springs, maintenance of baths, etc., £1,000; for Waikaremoana, maintenance of lake house, £2,250; and for the Waitomo Caves and hostel, £6,750. For the conveyance of children, instructors and teachers, and allowances for the board of children who have to live away from home, £80,500 is provided (last year £67,550). The annual instruction vote is £90,600 (last year £85,000). Training colleges (allowances and advances to students and transport expenses) are estimated to cost £12,000 (last year £15.000). The vote for school buildings, furniture and sites is £193,460 (last year £184,280). The child welfare vote is £150,939 (last year £134.385). HIGHWAYS VOTE In the main highways account the total vote is £1,113,250 (last year £1,017,208, and expenditure £959,510). For the improvement, maintenance and repair of main highways, £1,000,000 has been voted (last year £850,000, and expenditure £855,450). The total railways vote Is £6,658,479 (last year £6,671,337, and expenditure £6,057,199). The vote for North Island main lines and branches is £1,811,760; for South Island main, lines and branches, £3,211,100; Gisborne section, £16,600; Westport section, £40,090; Nelson section, £13,160; Picton section, £13,530; total working expenses of sections, £6,334,839 (last year £6,255,868, and expenditure £6,124,358). The total head office working expenses and subsidiary services is £7,097.396 (last year £7,013,337, and expenditure £6,852,341). The vote for the New Zealand-San Francisco mail service has been reduced from £27,000 to £25,000, but the subsidy on the New Zealand-Van-couver service remains at £20,000.
