The appropriation this yeahas been increased from £750 000 V. £900,000. which is payable to the Main Highways Revenue Fund Grants in aid to the university colleges this year are estimated as 10l low: Auckland, £9,750; Victoria £7.750; Canterbury, £6,000; Otaeo’ £15,350. In each case this year’s vote is identical with last year’s expenditure The free issue of postage stamps to members of both Houses of Parliament involved £2,326 last year, and the vote this year is £2,200. The Public Service Commissioner is voted £1.500, and his temporarv assist ant. £1.092. Pensions and allowances under tb* War Pensions Act, 1915, cost £1,17? #5 t last year. This year’s vote £1,175,000. Railway concessions and passes to members and ex- members of the Legis. lature and their families c*n £23,784 last year, and £24,000 is Divided this year. Expenditure under the heading of League of Nations last year is shown as follows: New Zealand’s proportion of secretarial expenses for 19;? £9,319; expenses of delegate to Geneva, £652. For the same purpose this year £IO,ISO and £SOO respectively are provided. TRANSPORT COMMISSION COSTS Toward the cost of the Auckland Metropolitan Transport Commisskn £ 4,100 was voted last year and £4.098 was expended. For Samoan administration £20,0)0 is to be voted this year. Last year s vote was £B,OOO. Formerly £12,0j)0 was provided by New Zealand reparation estates in Samoa. The profits from the estates are now to be paid to the public account. For the pay and expenses of the Samoan civil police £IB,OOO is voted. The cost last year of the Samoan military police now replaced by the civil police was £27,374, which was met by the Finance Act. For the maintenance of Cook Island lepers at Makogai, the vote this year is £ 3,000. Last year’s expenditure was £2,617. The travelling expenses last year of judges and associates were more than anticipated. The vote was £4,000, apd the expenditure £5,224. The vote has been renewed at £4,0)0. A bounty of £6,730 was paid to the Onakaka Iron and Steel Company last year. The expenditure is governed by the output of pig iron. A vote of £B.OOO is provided this year, the same provision as was made laat year. The High Commissioner’s office last year cost £55,500, including salaries. The vote was £44,986. This ve*r £44,769 has been provided. The expenses of special publicity work advertising New Zealand total £39,667. Last year, exclusive of salaries, the vote was £35.440, which has been increased to £35.590 this year. Entertainment of visitors to New Zealand last year cost £6,931 although the allocation was only £3,100. Tha vote has been increased to £5,000. This year £3,000 has been placed on the Estimates for flood relief at Dunedin. £4,100 was voted last year for the beautification of the location of the grave of the late W. F. Massey, but £1,919 only was spent. The vote this year is £2,085. £20,000 has been voted Otago University Museum. Last year £5,000 was voted and expended. The money is In the form of a £ for £ sudsidy up to £25,000. PLUNKET SOCIETY’S WORK A further sum of £I,OOO is voted for j the maintenance of the Karitane Ho«- • pital, Auckland. Subsidies toward the salaries of Plunket nurses cost £15,707 last year. The vote this year has been increased by £SOO to £16,500 because of the increase in the number of nurses. s The vote for the King George V. and > Infectious Diseases Hospital, Rotorua, * has been decreased from £16.000 to I £13,500. The expenditure was £12,77? - last year. St. Helens Hospital. Auckland, is i voted again £1,600 for wages. The maintenance vote is £4,350, the same ’ as last year. I The cost of naval defence this ye-ir s is estimated at £504,967, against £463,496 last year. Wages, etc., in con- [ nection with the Dunedin, Diomede, Philomel and Nucula are estimated at £226,100, in comparison with an exi penditure of £232,304 last year. Because of the erection of the naval l barracks and the lengthening of the ■ Calliope Dock, £25,000 has been voted. The proposed additional staff to comi plete Hobsonville and Wigram &ir- ■ dromes has been voted £5.930 -or ■ wages for six months only.
