QUEER WAGERS
There have been many extraordinary contests for wagers. Pierce Egan’s book on sport tells of a match more than 100 years ago, near Manchester, for a wager of <£lo. The bet was as to which of two men could pick up with his mouth 200 stones placed on the road a yard apart. The stones were arranged in double columns, with a basket placed in the centre into which the stones were to be dropped one by one. One man managed 160 stones before he retired beaten. The other competitor completed his task in one hour and 43 minutes. Just to prove his versatility, the winner offered to back himself for £lO to stand on one leg for two hours. There is no record of the offer having been accepted.
