BADMINTON

CHAMPIONSHIPS AT HAND A CLASS FOR NEW PLAYERS (By SHUTTLE) The New Zealand Badminton championships, to be played in the Scots Hall, Symonds Street, are now only four weeks away, and hard practice is the order of the day. The original plan was to have three courts in the hall, but it has now been decided that two will suffice. Since the hall is used extensively for dancing, it seemed that the surface would be too slippery, and it was proposed to lay the courts out on a fioor of taut canvas. As this might not be a satisfactory expedient, the tournament committee has decided instead to wash the lioor thoroughly, and then put the lines down on the wood. Players will prefer this to the canvas, which is liable to wrinkle, no matter how tightly stretched. To encourage new players, a class has been added for new members and juniors. This will embrace this year’s players or players under 18 years of age". 'Men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles will be played in this class, which should produce good Badminton, as some of the new members at the Parnell Club are particularly strong. Form at Parnell has been very in-and-out lately. Some of the new double pairs, notably Griffiths and Southon and Rishworth and Martin, have shown good form. In a singles last Saturday Rishworth beat Southon by a good margin. Rishworth was in great form, and returned Southon’s smashes for winners. C. Ellett and I. Ellett, of Northern, will play together in the men’s doubles in the championships, and should be a formidable pair. The Education Department Club, which plays in the Y.W.C.A. gymnasium , has a very keen membership, and some more than useful players. Last Monday several of the players put in the evening at Parnell, with the object of improving their games by watching experienced players in action.
