Riccarton Trials Disclose Form Horses

GAY SONNET BEST RIDERS AT HUNT FIXTURE (Special to THE S U2s J I Morses engaged at the Hunt meeting on Saturday were responsible for interesting trials at Riecarton this morning, but Gay Sonnet, who is now a popular pick for the Winter Cup. excelled all gallopers by finishing full of running at the end of four furlongs in 51 4-5, which was easily the best effort. Royal Saxon pleased his Cup admirers by covering live furlongs in 1.7. Others who were in their best form this morning were Money comb, Audience, Mull Feather and Sudden Storm. It was on the outside of the "trial” grass that the gallopers worked, but it was not conducive to very fast times. Gay Sonnet’s half-mile was executed up the back, where the track was a little faster, but the fact that she had a good weight in the saddle, showed rare brilliance in the early stages and finished full of running, illustrates how well she must be at present. Mer first three furlongs occupied 37 1-5, and to break 52 for the whole journey she did remarkably well. Sticking strictly to track gallops, Gay Sonnet’s chance of winning a race at the Grand National carnival appears particularly bright, and a good run on Saturday will bring her into even greater fancy for the Riecarton mile. In the Brabazon Handicap tomorrow she will be ridden by the local horseman, W. Bush, but owner-trainer Buchanan is endeavouring to secure the services of C. Emerson for the Cup. About Royal Saxon Though there is not such glamour surrounding Royal Saxon as is connected with many other visitors, his race performances reveal that ho is a good horse under winter conditions, and his five furlong gallop in 1.7 this morning was most impressive. He was brought home over the last half-mile by his stablemate, Blue Metal, but the Winter Cup candidate was by no means doing his best at any fetage of the journey. Royal Saxon is not engaged at the Hunt meeting, but next week trainer G. Fie-Iding may give the Southerner some stringing-up gallops which may bring him into considerable favour for his important engagements. Early Winners Desert Sor.g and Quickplunge did well to get to the end of half a mile in 52 1-5. Both these tliree-year-olds have shown improvement of late and a win for either may not be far distant. Honour and Pride covered lour furlongs in 55 1-5, and for the same journey Leader led The Viscount in 53 3-5. Dutch Money scampered over four furlongs up the back, but she was hard held, and for her last three furlongs iecorded 40 2-5. La Pompadour and Innisfree registered 53 for their half-mile sprint, and for the same distance Malmsey was showing the way to Kentish Lady, the time being 52 3-5. A gallop that was impressive was I i that of Full Feather and Sudden Storm, who got to the end-of six fur- | | longs in 1.21 1-5. Full Feather has ' ; been working better than ever lately. | Sarnia has not raced for some time, j but she showed this morning that she j has not forgotten how to gallop by ' running lour furlongs in 52 1-5. The Paladin filly will be a runner in the Flying Hack Handicap on Saturday. ! but she may not be sufficiently forj ward to show her best in that event. Over six furlongs Elysianor and ■ Amor put up 1.26, and for two furj longs less Juniper recorded 54. A Good Effort Kate Kelly’s live furlongs in 1.7 2-5 j was a. good effort. The Tractor filly j is showing better form on the tracks j now than ever before, and as she is I particularly fit she should show to ad- j vantage in her engagement on Satur- ! day. Bulolo was going better than safety , at the end of five furlongs in 1.7 2-5, and for the half-mile Troilus and J Fresh Breeze registered 53 2-5. A gallop that created a deep impression was that of Audience, who was j slightly ahead of Solrose, with Airplane over two lengths further back, at' the end of four furlongs in 52. Audience has previously demonstrated her paces on the track, and as she looks well at present she should be worth following in engagements near at hand. She will contest the Maiden on Saturday and must be hard to beat if she repeats this morning’s track effort. The Derby colt. Pink Coat, who arrived with H. J. Ellis’s team lasi evening, was on the track this morning and his appearance was favourably commented upon. He did two rounds on the sand track in the early hours and moved nicely. Prickles moved very freely during her six furlongs with Royal Flower, which occupied 1.24 2-5, and for his mile gallop Haze, after being assisted over the first half by Waterlow, recorded 1.52 2-5. Gold Tinge and Academy were sprinted four furlongs and they left that distance behind in 54 2-5. Gold Tinge is in nice condition at present to commence a preparation foliate spring racing. He still is being cared for by \Y. j. Tomkinsoh. Will Be Favourite King Balboa was on the track. He j looks exceptionally well after his re- I cent racing and during easy exercise ! this morning carried himself in verv 1 pleasing fashion. With L. J. Ellis in i the saddle be may see a short price in ! tlie Brabazon Handicap on Saturday. Honeycomb and Huntley sprinted attractively over four furlongs in 52 I and finished up their task pleas- j Aberfeldv and Perle de Leon cov- i ered nine furlongs in 2.7 1-5. Bonrose occupied 56 for her half-mile sprint, and for the same distance Rapier and ' Storm Raid finished on terms in 52 2-5. Over six furlongs Buoyant and Moy Hall did 1.22. Dumblane sprinted five furlongs in 1.8 3-5, and for his halfmile put up 54 2-5. The jumpers. Bonaryon and Grand j National, worked well over a mile. I and Grand Song and a mate recorded 52 3-5 for four furlongs. Over Country Fabriano <D. O’Connor) and Te Haunui (A. Youngman) jumped thro** brush fences in good style. Or i flam exhibition of fencing over two rounds °f country. He was associated with Kaikahu (Peart), but he always had too much toe for his companion and was in front at the end. At Washciyke last week. Oriflamb persistently refused to jump, but perhaps he will do better in his races near at hand. Kaikaku's showing was also good, but he rapped a couple of fences hard. Paris (Dempster), Taramoa (Dockerty) and Barrington (A. S. Ellis) set out to jump a round of the hurdles, but Barrington soon pulled his way to the front, and after giving a good exhibition finished well clear of his companions. Neither Paris or Taramoa was impressive. Among Southerners who made their , appearance at headquarters this morn- 1 ing were Pink Coat. King Balboa. Bar-

rington, Silver flight. Night Lad, T_• j Haunui and Fabriano. Riding Engagements The following are some of Saturday s riding engagements: H. Goldfinch.—Anolo. H. Dulieu.—Waitaunaha and Just John. L.
