ETCHINGS ON SHOW

ENGLISH AND AUSTRALIAN ARTISTS REPRESENTED MANY CHOICE EXAMPLES S’ Examples of distinguished work by foremost English and Australian etchers and other process artists are on view at an exhibition in room 103, Dilworth Btiildings, which was opened to the public today. In addition to etchings a number of colour wood blocks and drawings are on view. Among the etchings there is a preponderance of Australian work, and from tho items on view it is possible to gaugo the immense progress that the art is making in Australia. Sydney Long is represented by some superb bush studies and landscapes, each of which is handled with the hazy softness that is a characteristic of his work. Treated in bold manner, with remarkable contrasts of light and shade, the etchings ot' John C. Goodchild are now well in favour, and there are some choice examples of his work. Sydney Ure Smith’s talent is amply shown in a varied group of capable etchings. The famous Lindsay family is well represented in the show, Lionel with etchings and wood-cuts, and Norman with a set of “Bulletin” cartoons. There is also a drawing by “Hop.” of the “Bulletin,” and others by Ruby Lindsay and C. H. Percival. The English section of the show has many interesting items, among them being work by Eileen Soper, whose child studies are now eagerly collected. A beautiful Lee-Plankey was the first sold, and doubtless many covetous eyes will be cast upon the superb Whistler. Other English artists with works in the show are O. Soper, G. Delaney, Leslie Ward and Herbert Rose.

One feature of the show which should stimulate feelings of gratitude among art-lovers is the reasonable price set on the pictures.
