TARIFF BOARD UNLIKELY
MINISTER’S ASSURANCE DISCUSSION BY FARMERS (From Our Oum Correspondent J HAMILTON, Today. It is unlikely that the Government will set up a tariff board, according to information received from the Hon. W. B. Taverner, Minister of Customs, at today’s meeting of the Waikato Farmers’ Union. The Cambridge and Auckland executives recently wrote to the Government and local members, objecting strongly to the proposed establishment of a tariff board. Mr. Taverner states that the Government has no intention of establishing such a board, but he was in full accord with the views of the branch that the tariff question should be discussed on the floor of the House. The Prime Minister replied that he had noted the terms of the resolution, and was arranging for the question to receive attention. Mr. T. H. Henderson, president of the Food Board, asked by letter if the union represented all sections of the community. Mr. R. H. Feisst, (Cambridge) wrote that so long as the board did not represent political interests solely, it should be of benefit to the country. He understood the Government had already committed itself to give manufacturers a tariff advisory board. The best policy under the circumstances was to oppose the board. The letters were received.
