ROADING IN NEWMARKET

SUBDIVISION OF RAILWAY LAND

COUNCILLORS PROTEST

“We \v;inT to know where we and other local bodies stand in relation to the Government on such questions as these.' 1 said the Mayor of Newmarket. Mr. S. Donaldson, speaking: at last evening's meeting of the Borough Council, when the Railway Department's refusal to grant thecouncil a part of the old workshop site in Newmarket for roading purposes was read. The council had applied, under its town planning scheme, for a part ot' the land to the east of Broadway on which the old railway workshops stand, and which the Railway Department Intends to subdivide for building purposes. The Mayor moved that the department be asked if it had referred the request to the Town Planning Board. A good roading lay-out in that area would mean a great deal to the borough, he said, and it was too important a matter for the department to dismiss without a protest coming from the council. Various members contended that the Government was not justified in taking such a stankl, and, on the motion of Cr. W. J. Jaffrey, it was also decided to apply to the Town Planning Board for a ruling on the question. Councillors strongly protested against the action of the Auckland City Council in failing to give adequate notice of a by-law- providing for an increase in the charge of water supplied to Newmarket. The cleric explained that, though the by-law came into force on July 19, no letter of notification was sent to the council until July IS. After a brief discussion the council decided to grant permission for the erection of a new set of advertising hoardings in Khyber Pass. Mr. R. H. Michael spoke against the proposal, but was over-ruled by the opinion of the other councillors. Permission was given for two street collections to he taken up in the borough—one by the St. John Ambulance Association on August 9, and the other by the Sunshine Association on September 5.
