CRASHED INTO CYCLIST

MOTORIST IN COURT TALE OF CIGARETTE ASH Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. As the result of a collision on the Hutt Road in which a cyclist, C. E. Warr, was seriously injured, Nathaniel John Reid, salesman, aged 41, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court with causing bodily injury while driving in a state of intoxication. The medical evidence showed that Warr was severely hurt and would be incapacitated for six months, and would possibly suffer from shortness in one leg, which was broken. A witness said he saw accused driving erratically, swerve to the wrong side and hit a cyclist. He saw accused after the accident and considered that he was unfit to drive. Counsel's version for accused was that the day was wet and windy. Cigarette ash flew into Reid’s eye and temporarily blinded him. The car did not belong to him and he could not get bail. Eventually accused decided to plead guilty rather than to wait three months for trial, and was committed for sentence.
