HARBOUR BRIDGE PLAN
“GO AHEAD WITH IT,” SAYS SIR JAMES GUNSON NERVOUSNESS NEEDLESS The Waitemata Harbour bridge scheme has a strong advocate in Sir James Gunson. He is of the opinion that the project should go forward at an early date. Sir James has just returned from : a three months’ business tour of Cali- j fornia. where he was greatly im- | pressed with the enormous progress j on public works undertakings, and the | development of municipal enterprise. “We in Auckland need not be ner- J vous or hesitant about the further! development of the city,*’ said Sir • James, “and we need not be back- i ward in meeting proper demands for facilities and improvements commen- j surate with the growth of the city and j for the advancement of Auckland. I was impressed by the manner in which municipalities set to work on undertakings which were considered to be in the interests of citizens and the progress of their towns.” Sir James was of opinion that the construction of the harbour bridge would make for the great advance not only of the North Shore boroughs, and the North, but would also benefit the city side. He was not at present prepared to offer any definite opinion as to the basis of finance or what a bridge should cost. Nevertheless, j any scheme should be a worthy one, and a province of the wealth of Auck- ! land should not have difficulty in i financing a bridge which the city | could be proud oL
