’ FATHER STANDS TRIAL A little girl of 11 told a sordid story of her father’s conduct toward her, while her mother was absent on holiday, in the Supreme Court today. Norman McMillan, a motor mechanic, 35, was on trial before Mr. Justice Herdman and a jury on two charges of indecent assault on the 1 child. The alleged offences occurred at her home in Dargaville. Mir. V. R. Meredith prosecuted, and Mr. Rudd appeared for accused. Sergeant Cabb. who interviewed McMillan, said that accused announced his intention of pleading guilty, "to get the whole thing over.” but added that he knew nothing about ’ it. lie said that he was suffering from tire effects of influenza and had drunk a bottle of brandy. When charged with the offences, McMillan remarked.: “This is the result of I liquor.” McMillan went into the dock and _ ! gave a general denial to the girl's - allegations. strongly refuting the * charges that he had interfered with t the girl improperly. He admitted that e on one night he had drunk half a v bottle of brandy to combat an attack - of influenza, and could not remember f much that happened when he went to 1 bed.
