OTAGO DEFEATED
GAME ON SOFT GROUND SOUTHLAND RUGBY WIN Press Association INVERCARGILL, Wednesday. The first of this season’s home and home Rugby matches between Otago and Southland was played here today in the presence of a large attendance. Southland won a keenly-fought game by 11 points to 5. Rain during the week and this morning had made the ground very greasy, but it was not as bad as might have been expected. The game was principally confined to the forwards, with honours going to the Southland pack, which held a decided advantage in the scrums. Concerted back movements were almost out of the question, and vei-y few attempts were made to throw tlie ball about. In spite of the adverse conditions a surprisingly fast pace was maintained, the scene of play changing with unexpected suddenness at times.
Southland was practically at full strength, but several changes had been made in the original Otago side. For the winners tries were scored by Galt, Southern and Stubbs. Diack converted one. Otago’s only tr}' was scored by Scott, Faulks converting. This was the first score of the match.
