CUSTOMS INCREASE

PETROL TAX NEARLY DOUBLED FIGURES FOR 1929 Net Customs duty for the past 1 month at Auckland shows an increase of £S,S39 over the figures for July, • 1925. Customs revenue has shown i a pronounced increase since the end | of last March. | Customs revenue and tyre-tax fig- | ures for the first seven months of this year are already over £IOO,OOO in excess of the figures for the corresponding period of 1925, although they are just over £69,000 under the returns for the first seven months of 1927. Customs revenue and tyre-tax figures for the first seven months of 1929. compared with those for the corresponding months of 192 S and 1927, are as follow:

Tyre-tax figures for July totalled only £2,457. compared with £4,28S for July, 1925. Tyre-tax figures for the year to date are £24.034, as against £27,536 for the same period in 1925. Motor spirit taxation for the month totalled £12,470, against £15,665 in the previous July, but the collections to date for the year are £ISI.9OS, as against £109,067 for the first seven months of 1928. Beef duty for July totalled £9,936, compared with £9.696 in July. 1925; £ 7,97 Sin July. 1927. and £IO,OIB in July, 1926. Collections for the year now total £70,232. ! ' FIGURES FOR WELLINGTON Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. The net Customs figures for Wellington for July show an increase of £78,000 over those for July, 1925. Following are the details, the figures for July, 1928, being given in parentheses: — £323,237 (£245.468); beer duty, £4,070 (£4.117): motor spirit tax, £30,253 (£30,647); tyre tax, £5,452 (£4,380).
