EARTHQUAKE PROTECTION
LECTURE TO ARCHITECTS Recent investigations in the earthquake areas in the South Island, and the lessons learned from damaged buildings there, were described by Mr. C. R. Ford in a lecture given before the Auckland branch of the Institute of Architects recently. Mr. M. K. Draffin, chairman of the branch, presided. Describing the movement of the earth’s surface during a quake, Mr. Ford showed that the forces set in motion could be measured and buildings designed on scientific principles to resist them. He illustrated his address with lantern slides of the devastated area in the South, and commented on each structure as it was shown. The lecture was arranged by the branch in pursuance of its policy of discovering as much as possible about earthquakes and their relation to building construction.
