AUSTRALIAN CARS

COMPLETE MANUFACTURE CRITICISED TIME NOT OPPORTUNE While the Federal Prime Minister, Mr. S. M. Bruce, has promised adequate protection for all Australian manufactured cars, the New South Wales Automotive Manufacturers’ Association is levelling criticism at the scheme as premature. At its meeting this month the association passed the following resolution: “The Automotive Manufacturers’ Association of New South Wales disclaims all connection with any projects for Australian manufacture now before the public, nor can it locate any of its members who are interested. Only when its members are satisfied after careful examination, will the association approve of such a project.” Mr. Frank Edwards, secretary of the Chamber of Manufactures, said in Sydney on July 20: “First the parts, then the units, and finally the complete car is the way of progress in automotive manufacturing in which we believe. Bodies, tyres and garage equipment units are now being made here in large quantities. Those industries have arrived. They are ready for any demands which may be made by an Australian-made car organisation when it comes. Parts and accessories manufactures are growing apace. From among them will arise, in due course, the makers of such complete units as back axles, gearboxes, engines, electrical systems, etc.”
