ARBITRATION COURT
MINISTER WILL OPPOSE ITS ABOLITION HOTEL-WORKERS REQUESTS Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. Replying to an hotel-workers’ depu- j tation, the Hon. W. A. Veitch. Min- 1 ister o£ Labour, stated emphatically j that he would not help any movement i having for its object the abolition of the Arbitration Court. He admitted that improvements in the constitution ! of the court might be desirable. “We know that a strong effort is ! going to be made to abolish the court, j and I want to state frankly that I am not going to help that movement along. I want to see the Arbitration Court retained, if I possibly can. The deputation put forward a number of requests. The Minister said the question of forming Dominion unions was one that involved a very big principle, and he was not at all sure that they should alter the law in that regard. However, he was quite willing to go thoroughly into the question. He would also go into the problem of the citation of parties. He was prepared to reopen the question of a full day off. Remarking that the request, on the face of it, appeared to be a reasonable one, with regard to females not being employed after 10.30 p.m., the MinisI ter said that unless there was a [ strong case against it. he would grant the request.
