GUILTY OF ABDUCTION
YOUNG MAN’S CONDUCT The general denial with which Raymond Claude Tanfield, a young married taxidriver, met the allegations of a 15-year-old girl, before Mr. Justice Qstler, in the Supreme Court yesterday, when he stood his trial on five charges of carnal knowledge and abduction, was disbelieved by the jury. Mr. Hubble represented the Crown, and Mr. Schramm appeared for accused. In the course of his evidence refuting the girl’s accusations, Tanfield asserted that he had met the girl only on March 30, whereas the offences were alleged to have taken place between March 16 and June 4. His Honour commented at one stage:—“You are really telling the jury that the girl abducted you.” In his summing-up, his Honour pointed out there was no evidence on the first count, but on the others there was no motive suggested for the girl to have given false testimony. Found guilty of one charge of carnal knowledge and of abduction, Tanfield is to be sentenced on Saturday.
