YOUNG MAN IN COURT CONSTABLE’S SMART ARREST Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. Smart work on the part of Sergeant Carmody resulted in the arrest of William Edward Francis, aged 18, about an hour after a complaint had been lodged by a young woman at Mount Cook that she had been knocked down and robbed of a handbag. Francis appeared in the Wellington Police Court yesterday chargbd with robbing Catherine Lyons of a purse containing 17s. a Post Office savings bank book, and other articles, at the same time u»ing personal violence. In applying for a remand, Sub-Inspector Lander said the charge was an indictable one on the facts, which showed that the young woman was walking past the Technical School when she was caught by accused and thrown to the ground, and her bag was snatched from her. A remand was granted, bail being allowed in the accused’s own bond of CIOO, and two sureties of £SO each. He is to report daily to the police.
